A wave of bombings and shootings killed at least nine people across Iraq Friday.

Two of the attacks occurred in and around the capital, Baghdad, where officials say explosions killed at least five people.

Officials also say a militant attack left two policemen and two soldiers dead near the northern city of Mosul.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, which are the latest in a surge of violence in the country.

This has been the deadliest year in Iraq since 2008, with the violence increasing since April. The United Nations estimates more than 7,500 people have been killed in 2013, most of them civilians.
