Japan's Ruling Coalition Wins Parliamentary Election

Exit polls show Japan's ruling coalition has won a majority of seats in the upper house of parliament in Sunday's election.

The win by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Democratic Party and the junior partner New Komeito will give Mr. Abe's coalition control of both houses of parliament.

Mr. Abe told reporters the victory gives his party a stronger mandate to push through reforms aimed at reviving Japan's economy.

"We have received overwhelming support from the people for our policies of improving the economy and solid and stable politics. We will continue forward with our brand of stable politics."

Exit polls indicate his coalition will win more than 70 of the 121 seats at stake in the upper house.

Voter turnout was reported low with just 52 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

The prime minister has made economic recovery his top priority since taking office for a second time after last December's general election.
