Missing New York Woman Found Dead in Turkey

Turkish news reports say authorities have found a body believed to be that of a New York woman who went missing last month while vacationing alone in Istanbul. Police are reported questioning at least 10 people in the case.

The state-run Anatolia news agency says the body of a woman identified as Sari Sierra was discovered Saturday near the ruins of the old city wall. Anatolia says the body was found with a head wound, while police are quoted in the daily Hurriyet as saying the victim may have been stabbed to death. No official cause of death has been released.

Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, went missing in the city January 21.

Her whereabouts had attracted significant public interest in Turkey, where tourist disappearances are considered rare. Istanbul police had set up a special unit to find her.

The victim's family last made contact with her on January 21, the day before she was scheduled to return to the United States. She had been vacationing in Turkey since January 7, exploring her photography hobby.
