New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner has acknowledged sending lewd pictures of himself to women even after quitting his seat in the U.S. Congress in 2011 because of similar activity.

Weiner made the admission Tuesday after a gossip website published sexually explicit text messages and photographs he allegedly sent to a young woman last year.

Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, stood by him when he made his latest admission. Abedin, a close adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said her husband made some "horrible mistakes" before and after he resigned from Congress, but insisted she loves and has forgiven him.

Weiner said he would not drop out of the race for September's Democratic primary, but an editorial in The New York Times Wednesday called on Weiner to end his campaign.

Weiner has built a narrow lead over six other Democratic opponents since launching his campaign in May.
