U.S. President Barack Obama has called for women to be paid at the same rate that men are paid on the same job.

The U.S. leader said in his weekly address Saturday that is is an embarrassment that women earn less than men in the same professions and with the same education.

President Obama issued an executive order this week prohibiting federal contractors from retaliating against employees who discuss their salaries. The order is widely viewed as a way for women to become better informed about their pay rate.

The call for equal pay for women reinforces a top election-year issue for Democrats eager to mobilize women to vote.

Congresswoman Cathy Memories Rodgers of Washington state delivered the Republican address. She said Obama's economy is hurting women. The congresswoman said Republican proposals to help small businesses and increase jobs would benefit women and men.
