Saudi Arabia Disrupts Al-Qaida Cell Planning Attacks

  • VOA News

Saudi Arabia says it has dismantled an al-Qaida linked militant group that was plotting attacks against government and foreign targets.

Interior Ministry officials say they arrested 62 suspected members of the cell, including 59 Saudis and three foreigners.

They say some members of the group are still at large.

Saudi officials say their monitoring of "suspicious activities on social media networks" led to the arrests.

Reuters quotes an Interior Ministry spokesman saying the cell had links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a jihadist group which operates in both Iraq and Syria.

He said authorities had found a laboratory to make explosives and seized nearly $270,000 in funds intended for the militant cell.
