Russia: Two Militants Planning Terror Attack Killed Near Moscow

Russian officials said Monday that security forces killed two suspected militants and detained another, in a special operation near Moscow that thwarted a terrorist attack on the capital.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the operation took place in the town of Orekhovo-Zuyevo in the Moscow Region and that the suspected militants opened fire after they were ordered to surrender. One special operations officer was slightly wounded.

The NAK identified the suspects as Russian citizens and said they had undergone training in the "Afghanistan-Pakistan region" in preparation for a terrorist attack in Moscow.

The Kremlin said that President Vladimir Putin had been informed about both the planning and the results of the operation.

Also Monday, at least three people were killed and more than 40 injured when two car bombs went off in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan in Russia's restive North Caucasus region.

The explosions took place outside the headquarters of the court bailiff's service.

Islamic militants in mainly Muslim Dagestan regularly carry out attacks targeting police, officials and members of the government-approved clergy.
