Scientists Create a Magnetic Monopole

International scientists working at Amherst College, in Massachusetts, report they succeeded in creating, identifying and photographing a synthetic magnetic monopole.

Ordinarily, no matter how big or small, all magnets have north and south pole. More than 80 years ago British theoretical physicist Paul Dirac predicted that magnetic monopoles are possible, but they have never been found in nature.

A team of scientists led by physics Professor David S. Hall says the synthetic magnetic monopoles were created within an extremely cold atomic gas. The team managed to photograph the monopoles at the ends of tiny whirlpools of the ultra cold gas.

Scientists say that research of synthetic electric and magnetic fields is rapidly expanding and may lead to development of new materials, such as superconductors that transmit electricity without power losses.
