South Africa Probes Deadly Bus Crash

South African police are going through the wreckage of a double-decker bus to find the cause of a crash that killed 24 people Friday in a mountain pass near Cape Town.

Authorities say the bus veered off a road 140 kilometers northeast of the city in the Hex River pass and landed on its side. Rescuers found the vehicle crushed against the side of a mountain.

Rescue crews used a crane to lift the mangled bus and cut away twisted metal from the wreckage.

South African media say 66 other passengers sustained moderate to severe injuries, and quote authorities as saying braking problems may have caused the wreck.

One traffic official quoted by the French news agency said the driver appeared to have tried to slow the bus before losing control.
