A strong earthquake on Taiwan has has left one man dead, injured several others, and panicked residents throughout the island.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of Sunday's tremor at 6.2 and says it was centered about 250 kilometers south of Taipei, at a depth of 20 kilometers.

Taiwan's National Fire Agency said a man was killed by a rock slide on Mount Ali in central Taiwan.

The tremor was also felt in Hong Kong.

Another earthquake late Saturday shook the southern Philippines. The 5.7 quake damaged dozens of buildings and injured several people. Nervous residents reported several aftershocks.
