Three Dead in Swiss Workplace Shooting

Three people died and seven were injured after a gunman opened fire on workers at a wood-processing company in central Switzerland.

Witnesses say the shooter opened fire as workers took a break in the company canteen early Wednesday at the Kronospan plant in the town of Menznau, west of Lucerne.

Police say the suspected gunman was an employee and is among the dead. No information has been released as to the possible motive of the attack.

Kronospan Chief Executive Mario Capozzo described the gunman as "quiet."

"We ourselves are very surprised. The perpetrator was with us for many years, more than 10 years. He was a quiet man. One has not seen or felt... No other incidents involving him are known."

Swiss media reports the company recently announced it is cutting production after a poor crop season.

Switzerland has a long history of gun ownership, but gun crime in the country remains relatively rare.
