Twenty-three people were arrested Thursday on charges related to the alleged illegal financing of the political party that carried former President Otto Perez Molina to power, Guatemalan authorities said.

National Civil Police spokesman Jorge Aguilar said more arrests were expected.

Judge Miguel Angel Galvez said 45 arrest orders have been issued against business executives and former government officials.

Perez Molina and his former vice president, Roxana Baldetti, are in jail awaiting trial in multiple corruption cases.

Thursday's arrests have to do with the alleged financing of the Patriot Party in exchange for favors.
