American Shot Dead in Israel After Killing Hotel Worker

An American man has opened fire at an Israeli resort hotel, killing a hotel employee before being shot dead by Israeli police.

Israeli authorities say a 23-year-old U.S. citizen from New York stole a gun Friday from a security guard before shooting and killing a hotel cook.

The man later barricaded himself in a kitchen at the Leonardo Club Hotel in the southern city of Eilat and opened fire during negotiations with police. He was shot dead by officers.

Police say the incident stemmed from a work dispute between the man, who was fired from his job at the hotel, and the victim, a 33-year-old Israeli from the Galilee region.

Officials say the gunman was in Israel as part of an American-Israeli work exchange program.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
