Vietnam Imprisons 22 Dissidents

A Vietnamese court has sentenced 22 members of an outlawed Buddhist group to lengthy prison terms for attempting to overthrow the communist government.

Lawyer Nguyen Huong Que said Monday the group leader, Phan Van Thu, was sentenced to life in prison, while 21 others, including Thu's son were given terms ranging from 10 to 17 years.

Que said the group operated under the cover of an eco-tourism company and authored documents criticizing the government.

Last month, the government imprisoned 14 activists on similar charges.
