16 Afghans Dead in Taliban Attack

Afghan officials say Taliban insurgents have killed at least 16 people in eastern Afghanistan, with some civilians reported among the victims.

Provincial Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada said militants infiltrated a police checkpoint in Andar district on Tuesday and killed 10 members of the local militia and at least six civilians. Details of their deaths are unclear, but there are some reports that the victims were poisoned before being shot to death.

The provincial governor has not confirmed that they were poisoned. An investigation is underway.

The Taliban claimed responsibility, in a statement to the French news agency.

Also Wednesday, police said a suicide bomber on foot attacked a bus carrying Afghan army personnel and injured 10 people -- six military and four civilians. No one was killed in the attack.

A police spokesman said the attacker approached the bus in western Kabul Wednesday morning and detonated his explosives while the bus was picking up its passengers.

The Taliban have also claimed that attack.
