U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has announced that on the way home from his trip to Asia, he will stop for a visit with the parents of a 25-year-old diplomat recently killed in Afghanistan.
Kerry said he will stop Monday in Chicago to offer condolences to the parents of Anne Smedinghoff, who was among six people - five Americans and one Afghan - who were killed by bomb blasts in the southern province of Zabul while delivering textbooks to Afghan schoolchildren.
Along with the diplomat, three U.S. soldiers, a civilian Defense Department employee and an Afghan doctor were killed in the April 6 attack.
The deaths occurred just two weeks after Kerry met with Smedinghoff on a visit to Afghanistan.
After his visit to Chicago, Kerry is expected to return home to Washington.
