Former CIA director David Petraeus will join the University of Southern California's faculty as a professor.

A USC statement says beginning later this year Petraeus will teach classes, participate in seminars and panels, and mentor military veterans.

The former general commanded coalition forces during the so-called surge in Iraq and later in Afghanistan.

Petraeus took over at the CIA in 2011, but resigned late last year after admitting to an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Petraeus has a Ph.D. from Princeton University and has taught economics and international relations classes at the U.S. Military Academy.
