Afghan Security Forces Kill Insurgents After Kabul Airport Attack

Afghan officials say security forces have killed a group of seven insurgents who attacked Kabul's main airport Monday.

The attack began before dawn with explosions and gunfire focused on the military side of the facility.

Insurgents then occupied a nearby building under construction and fired toward the airport, which serves as a base for coalition forces.

After several hours of gunbattles with security forces, officials said all seven of the insurgents had been killed.

There were no immediate reports of civilian or security force casualties.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Also Monday, Poland said one of its soldiers died when a mine exploded during a patrol in eastern Afghanistan, near Ghazni.

Poland has the fifth-largest contribution to the U.S.-led NATO coalition with about 1,700 troops in Afghanistan.

Most foreign combat troops are due to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
