Hungarian Man Charged with Nazi-Era Crimes Dies

A former police officer indicted in Hungary on charges that he abused Jews and assisted in their deportation to Nazi death camps during World War Two has died.

Laszlo Csatari, who denied the charges against him, was 98 years old. His lawyer said he died from pneumonia Saturday in a Budapest hospital.

Csatari was awaiting trial on charges prosecutors filed in June, saying he beat prisoners and assisted their deportation from the town of Kosice in present-day Slovakia.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which is active in pursuing Nazis who have yet to be brought to justice, named Csatari in 2012 as its most wanted war crimes suspect.

In 1948, a Czechoslovakian court sentenced Csatari in absentia for similar crimes. He then spent decades living in Canada before returning to Hungary.
