Pakistan Earthquake Toll Rises to 208

Officials in Pakistan say the death toll from a strong earthquake in southwestern Pakistan Tuesday has risen to 208.

Officials made the announcement early Wednesday after scores of mud houses collapsed in the mountainous Awaran district of Baluchistan province near the Iranian border. Rescue teams are still working in the area.

The powerful temblor Tuesday also caused the seabed to rise and create a small island. Pakistani news channels showed images of the rocky terrain that rose from the sea off the country's southern coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and an epicenter about 230 kilometers southwest of Dalbandin in Baluchistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.

Officials say the death toll may still rise.

Pakistan's Geo TV reports that tremors were felt in other parts of Pakistan and in some cities of neighboring India, including New Delhi.
