Europe's longest-serving leader claimed victory on Sunday after his party took a clear lead in Luxembourg’s snap elections.
Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who has been in power since 1995, said on Monday that he will try to form a new government after his Christian Social People's Party led the field with 23 seats in the 60-seat parliament. That is down from 26 seats after the party got about 34 percent of the vote Sunday, compared to 38 percent four years ago.
Luxembourg is one of the world's smallest countries, but it is also one of the richest.
The elections, which had been scheduled to take place next June, were moved up following a scandal involving misconduct by the secret service. A coalition partner of Juncker's ruling party withdrew support from the prime minister, insisting he take responsibility for the scandal.
