Shootings Escalate Tensions on Israeli-Lebanese Border

Israeli troops shot a Lebanese soldier early Monday, hours after a Lebanese army sniper killed an Israeli soldier as he drove along the volatile border late at night.

An Israeli military spokesman says the shooting happened after Israeli troops had identified "suspicious movement" along the frontier and fired at two Lebanese soldiers, hitting at least one of them. Their condition was unclear and there was no immediate response from the Lebanese military.

The incident followed the death of 31-year-old Shlomi Cohen who was fatally shot late Sunday while travelling in a military vehicle along the border region near the Rosh Hanikra crossing, close to the Mediterranean coast.

Cohen's shooting prompted a formal Israeli complaint to UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force that monitors to volatile border region.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon later said in a statement that UNFIL was cooperating with both sides to "ascertain the facts."
