UN Postpones Exhibit on Jewish History

The U.N.'s cultural organization, UNESCO, says an exhibit on Jewish history that was supposed to open this week in Paris is postponed until June.

The exhibit is called "People, Book, Land -- the 3,500 Year Relationship of the Jewish People to the Holy Land."

UNESCO says 22 Arab members said the exhibition could disrupt the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. They objected to words and images that refer to Israel as a Jewish state because of Judaism's historic ties to the region.

Palestinians have yet to recognize Israel as being a Jewish homeland.

UNESCO stresses that the display has not been canceled, only postponed. It says it is working with the U.S.-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, which organized the exhibition, on the final wording and visual context.

UNESCO says it wants to promote respect and tolerance as it fights all forms of racism and anti-Semitism.
