Iraqi officials say security forces have regained control of the Transportation Ministry compound in Baghdad, after militants stormed the site and took hostages. At least seven people were killed, including police and civilians.
Six of the attackers were also killed -- including two who had detonated suicide vests in the initial assault.
Further information about the attack and police operation to retake the compound were not immediately clear.
Iraqi troops had sealed off roads around the capital following the assault, and areas leading to Baghdad's fortified Green Zone were closed.
No group claimed responsibility, but state buildings have been a target of al-Qaida-linked groups. They, along with Sunni Muslim insurgents, have been trying to destabilize the Shi'ite-led government.
Also Thursday, a car bomb ripped through a market in Baghdad's Shi'ite-majority Kasra neighborhood, killing at least four people. Another car bomb exploded at a Baghdad bus station, killing five people.
Sunni militants, including the al-Qaida-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, have also been battling government troops for control of the city of Fallujah.
