Kejriwal Quits Delhi Post After 49 Days

The chief minister of India's capital region, who was voted into office following his anti-corruption campaign, has stepped down after only 49 days in office.

Arvind Kejriwal said he resigned from his Delhi post because the two main parties have combined to thwart this efforts for a new anti-corruption bill.

Kejriwal is the leader of a new political party, Aam Aadmi, or Common Man, which made a stunning breakthrough in the Delhi state elections in December.

Late Saturday, the Indian Cabinet approved a recommendation by Delhi's lieutenant governor, the nominal head of the Indian capital, to put Delhi under the rule of the president, which would rule out immediate re-elections.

Analysts says Kejriwal's decision to step down may be part of a broader strategy, freeing him to to lead his party's campaign in a general election due by May.
