Co-Pilot is 'Hijacker' of Ethiopian Airline

Swiss aviation officials say the man who hijacked an Ethiopian Airlines plane to Geneva was the co-pilot.

Authorities say the co-pilot, who has asked for asylum, took control of the Boeing 767 Monday when the pilot took a bathroom break.

The flight originated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, and was headed for Rome with nearly 200 passengers.

Ethiopian Airlines says the aircraft "was forced to proceed to Geneva" where it landed safely.

Police at Geneva's international airport escorted passengers one by one, their hands over their heads, from the taxied aircraft to waiting vehicles.

The unidentified co-pilot has been taken into custody in Geneva.
