Refugee Agency Worker Kidnapped, Killed in C.A.R

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) says one of its workers was kidnapped and killed in the Central African Republic capital.

The agency says the worker, a C.A.R. national, was abducted Thursday morning in Bangui's PK16 district, and that his body was recovered a few hours later.

UNHCR public information officer Katerina Kitidi tells VOA the killers "presumably" belong to the anti-Balaka militia but investigators are still gathering details.

A UNHCR statement said "the killing can be placed in the framework of the inter-communal violence that has been tearing apart" the C.A.R in recent months.

Muslims in the C.A.R. have been fleeing their homes by the thousands to escape attacks by the largely Christian anti-Balaka militias. French and African peacekeepers have been mostly unable to stop the violence.

The militias formed after mostly Muslim Seleka rebels overthrew the president last year and went on a spree of killing and looting.
