Iraqi police say a car bomb exploded in Baghdad's Amiriyah district Wednesday, killing two civilians and wounding four others.
The attack came one day after insurgents assassinated the Baghdad provincial governor (Ali al-Haidari) and a suicide truck bomber killed 10 people at a security checkpoint.
A group led by al-Qaida ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi claimed responsibility for those attacks. The claim, which appeared on a website frequently used by insurgent groups, has not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military said five American soldiers and a Marine were killed and four others were wounded in separate attacks Tuesday in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq.
Iraq's interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi says the country's elections will take place as scheduled on January 30, despite rising threats of violence.
Mr. Allawi told reporters in Baghdad Wednesday the "violence, terrorists and the outlaws will not be allowed to stop the political process and destroy the country."
