The International Atomic Energy Agency is to report Friday, to the United Nations Security Council on Iran's compliance with the Council demand of suspending its nuclear program.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday the Security Council must take stern action if the I.A.E.A. report finds Iran has not suspended its uranium enrichment activity - a process that can produce fuel for generating electricity as well as for nuclear weapons.
Iran insists it will not abandon its right to develop nuclear energy, which Tehran says is for peaceful purposes.
The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, quotes President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying Iran does not "give a damn" about Security Council resolutions.
Permanent Security Council members Russia and China are opposed to any punitive action against Iran, arguing that the I.A.E.A. should handle the issue. The two countries are also urging Iran to comply with I.A.E.A. demands to satisfy Western concerns.
