The Pentagon will not demote retired General David Petraeus for providing his mistress and biographer with classified information.
"The Army completed its review of his case and recommended no additional action,'' Assistant Defense Secretary Stephen Hedger wrote in a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Friday. Given that review, Hedger said Defense Secretary Ash Carter "considers this matter closed.''
Media reports had surfaced indicating the Pentagon was considering downgrading Petraeus to a three-star general. Such a move, if taken, would have reduced his retirement salary.
Petraeus lied to FBI agents, divulged sensitive data to Paula Broadwell, and fretted about how she handled them in an interview she recorded with him, court documents showed. She was the co-author of a biography about Petraeus titled All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.
The revelation that Petraeus and Broadwell had been having an affair forced Petraeus to resign as director of the CIA and tarnished his reputation.
