32 Killed in Latvia Supermarket Roof Collapse

Authorities in Latvia say the death toll from the collapse of a supermarket's roof has climbed to at least 32 people, including three firefighters. Authorities say 35 people were injured.

Rescue workers stopped working periodically Friday to ask relatives of missing people to call their loved ones, enabling the workers to pinpoint the location of the ringing mobile phones in the wreckage.

The interior minister said construction code violations probably caused the 500-square-meter roof of the store, located near the capital, Riga, to cave in Thursday.

Officials say the roof appeared to collapse in stages.

Emergency workers say the firefighters were killed when a section of the roof fell on them after their arrival on the scene.
