18 Dead in Central China Mine Fire

TEXT SIZE - +

Eighteen people are dead after a mine fire in central China that broke out Monday.

Officials raised the death toll Tuesday after recovering the bodies of 13 missing workers.

Chinese state-run media report the blaze broke out in Xinli coal mine in central Hunan province.  Three miners escaped, while the bodies of five others were recovered immediately.

Efforts to reach the remaining miners were hampered by a lack of electricity inside the mine.

China's mines are among the world's deadliest, with thousands of deaths reported each year from fires, floods and other disasters.
