Bus Accident Kills 40 in Peru


A bus traveling in western Peru has plunged off a remote mountain road, leaving at least 40 people dead and 18 others injured.

Authorities say the bus was traveling in the province of Ancash Saturday when it fell 300 meters into a ravine. The incident happened near the village of Pampa as the bus headed to Tayabamba from Lima.

The injured passengers were taken to a local medical center for treatment.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Accidents are common in Peru, where roads and weather are bad and driving regulations rarely enforced.
