Six Taliban fighters in Afghanistan killed a border policeman and a civilian Sunday before being shot dead themselves as they attacked the home of a well-known provincial police chief.
The attackers, all wearing suicide vests, launched their assault from a school building near the home of General Abdul Razeq in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province, but were killed before they could enter his residence. He was in the house at the time of the attack, but was not harmed.
Abdul Razeq is a well-known anti-Taliban figure in Kandahar and has survived other attacks.
In the Afghan capital of Kabul and elsewhere in the country, hundreds of anti-Taliban demonstrators took to the streets to protest the recent killing of civilians in Taliban attacks.
On Friday, Taliban gunmen stopped three small buses in western Ghor province and shot dead 14 passengers on the side of the road after identifying them as Hazara Shi'ites. Extremist Sunni Muslims like the Taliban view the Shi'ites as apostates.
