Al-Jazeera Slams Morocco's Suspension of its Operations

TEXT SIZE - +

The Al-Jazeera television network has denounced Morocco's decision to suspend the channel's operations in the north African country.

A report on Al-Jazeera's website Saturday cited a network statement saying the closure of its bureau in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, will not change the channel's editorial guidelines.

Al-Jazeera said its coverage of Moroccan issues has always been professional, balanced and accurate.

Morocco's government suspended Al-Jazeera on Friday and withdrew accreditation for its staff, citing "numerous failures" that it said went against the rules of "serious and responsible journalism."

Moroccan officials said Al-Jazeera's reporting had distorted Morocco's image. One official said authorities disagree with the way the network handles issues of Islamists and the Western Sahara.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
