A U.S. soldier shot and killed herself Monday at an Army base in the southern state of Virginia, prompting a brief lockdown at the base.
Authorities say the soldier barricaded herself in a building at Fort Lee Army base and fatally shot herself in the head as police tried to negotiate with her.
They say the soldier, who has not yet been identified, was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The base was put under lockdown for about an hour during the incident.
Fort Lee is in central Virginia, about 215 kilometers south of Washington, DC.
The base has a population of about 34,000 people, including service members from all branches of the military, their families, and government civilians and contractors.
