1950s US Singer Eddie Fisher Dies

Singer Eddie Fisher, a music superstar of the 1950s, has died. He was 82.

Fisher sold millions of records. Among his string of hits were "Oh, My Papa," and "Count Your Blessings." However, he will probably be best remembered for the scandal that erupted when he began an affair with actress Elizabeth Taylor while married to Hollywood sweetheart Debbie Reynolds.

Reynolds and Fisher were known as "America's favorite couple." The storybook marriage began to unravel when Fisher's close friend and Taylor's husband, movie producer Mike Todd, was killed in a plane crash.

Fisher helped console Taylor and they eventually began an affair. He divorced Reynolds to marry Taylor. A few years later, Taylor left Fisher for married actor Richard Burton.

Fisher was never able to revive his singing career that fizzled following his marriage woes.

Eddie Fisher had four children, including actresses Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" films, and Joely Fisher.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
