At Least 11 Dead in Indian Clashes with Police

At least 11 people have been killed in violence over local elections in India's restive northeast.

Police in India's Assam state said Tuesday they shot at rioters who attacked officers and election officials in the western Goalpara district. They say many people were wounded in the clashes.

Police say that some of the protesters have been torching houses and committing other violence.

Members of a local tribe protested the election for village councils, saying they undermine the authority of their own autonomous council.
