A charity established to assist those injured and the families of those killed by the Boston Marathon bombings has made a second distribution to victims of $18 million.
One Fund Boston said Tuesday the cash gifts of varying amounts went to more than 200 people most affected by the tragic events of April 15, 2013.
The group has distributed more than $80 million to Boston Marathon victims or their survivors.
In the latest distribution, the families of those killed received an additional $100,000 each. The 35 victims who lost limbs or suffered severe limb damage received an additional $150,000 to $1.1 million each.
The money was donated by more than 200,000 individuals, corporations and charitable foundations. One Fund Boston says it has received contributions from each one of the 50 United States and at least 60 countries.
Thirty-six members of the One Fund community have declined a cash gift and requested their share of the distribution either go to other victims or help fund health services for “invisible injuries” such as hearing damage and mental health.
The nonprofit will establish the One Fund Center at Massachusetts General Hospital to help victims and their families. The group will use $1.5 million to establish the Center.
The attack, carried out with two pressure cooker bombs, killed three people and injured an estimated 264 others. Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev are suspected to have carried out the bombings.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s trial is set for early November. He has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the 30 charges leveled against him.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev died in a shootout with police.
