Britain says a teacher held hostage by militants in Libya has been released unharmed and reunited with his family after four months in captivity.
The Foreign Office, in a brief statement Saturday, said details of the abduction of David Bolam, the head teacher at the Benghazi European School, had been kept secret for his own security. Details of his release were also sketchy.
Bolam appeared on a video released by militants August 28, when he appealed to British Prime Minister David Cameron to secure his release.
British news reports quote government officials as saying no ransom was paid for Bolam's release. The reports say the British teacher's release was secured by local political factions in eastern Libya.
Militias have controlled large areas of Libya since 2011, when leader Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown and killed during mass uprisings against his rule. Since then, the country's police and army have failed to subdue fighting among various factions vying for power.
