Chinese officials say an earthquake has hit a thinly populated area of western China, leaving at least four people dead and more than 50 injured.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 5.9 at a depth of 14 kilometers and said it struck late Saturday afternoon about 30 kilometers from the county of Kangding in Sichuan province.

Some homes collapsed and many others were damaged.

The official Xinhua news agency reported Sunday that 42 students were injured in a stampede at a primary school in Tagong town while trying to run for safety.

Authorities are still assessing the damage.
