Somalia's al-Shabab Islamic militants are claiming responsibility for a suicide car bombing that killed two people and wounded three others at a building housing Turkish embassy staff in Mogadishu.

A Turkish security guard and a Somali civilian were killed.

Guards shot at the car as it approached the building Saturday, killing two attackers before a third militant set off the bomb.

The al-Qaida-linked militant group, which wants to turn Somalia into an Islamic state, had said it would step up attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki called the bombing a cowardly act, but said it will not shake the U.S. commitment to continue working for the brighter, more democratic and prosperous future the people of Somalia deserve.
