Deputy UN Chief: CAR Falling into Complete Chaos

The deputy secretary-general of the United Nations is calling for a U.N. peacekeeping force in the Central African Republic, warning that the country is spiraling into complete chaos.

At the Security Council Monday, Jan Eliasson endorsed a plan by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to transform an African force already on the ground in the CAR into a U.N. peacekeeping force.

Eliasson says the situation requires prompt and decisive action.

Mr. Ban's other options for the CAR include financial backing for the current African force.

The situation in the Central African Republic has been chaotic since March, when rebels overthrew President Francois Bozize. The transitional government has been unable to control the former rebels or keep Muslim and Christian groups from fighting each other.
