Dominican Republic Reports First Cholera Death

The Dominican Republic has confirmed its first death from a cholera outbreak that began in Haiti last year.

Health officials said a 53-year-old man died last week.

The Latin American Herald Tribune reports the Dominican Republic's Health Ministry will start a cholera control and monitoring operation in the area were the cholera victim lived.

Authorities say more than 150 cholera cases have been reported in the Dominican Republic since the outbreak in Haiti.

Nearly 4,000 people in Haiti have died in the cholera epidemic.
