The Egyptian military has denied a report that General Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has decided to run for president.
The military said Thursday that a Kuwaiti newspaper report that appeared to confirm Sissi would run is inaccurate.
A military spokesman, Colonel Ahmed Mohammed Ali, described the report as journalistic "interpretation" and said Sissi would only make such an announcement to the Egyptian people.
Earlier Thursday, Kuwait's Al-Seyassah newspaper quoted Sissi as saying he would run in the presidential race that is expected to take place this spring.
Sissi has been widely expected to announce a bid for the presidency. He has the explicit backing of Egypt's powerful military.
He gained prominence last year when he led the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, following months of mass protests against his rule.
