The weather is so bitterly cold in the southern U.S. state of Kentucky that an inmate who escaped from prison decided to turn himself in to police after being out in the elements for several hours.
Authorities say Robert Vick broke free late Sunday from the minimum-security Blackburn Correctional Complex.
By Monday, temperatures had dropped below -12 degrees C. Police say he walked into a motel that afternoon and asked a clerk to call the police.
Paramedics checked Vick out, turned him over to authorities and he was sent back to prison.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb said Vick would have been wearing his prison-issued khaki pants, shirt and jacket when he escaped.
