German, Canadian Athletes Win Third Olympic Gold Medal

Athletes from Germany and Canada each won the third Olympic gold medals of their careers Monday at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

In women's Alpine skiing, Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch took first place in the super combined. She posted a time of two minutes, 34.62 seconds after one downhill and one slalom run.

She finished ahead of Austria's Nicole Hosp and American favorite Julia Mancuso, who made a key mistake halfway through the course.

Canada's Charles Hamelin won his third gold with a first-place finish in 1,500-meter short track speed skaing. The veteran maintained a top-three position through most of the 14-lap race, leaving enough to outlast his opponents.

Also Monday, Norwegian skier Ole Einar Bjoerndalen goes for a record 13th career Winter Olympic medal, as he competes in the 12.5-kilometer biathlon pursuit.

On Saturday, the 40-year-old Bjoerndalen became the oldest Winter Olympic gold medalist in an individual sport. He finished first in the biathlon 10-kilometer sprint.

Curling began for the men and women Monday, with four of the six medalists from the 2010 games facing off against each other in their opening matches.

At one point Monday, Norway led in the overall medal count with seven, and was tied with Canada, the United States, the Netherlands and Germany for most gold medals with two.

There are 98 medal events at the Sochi Games, 12 more than in Vancouver in 2010.
