U.S. authorities say a gunman has died after opening fire on downtown area buildings in the Texas state capital of Austin.
The gunman tried to set fire to the Mexican consulate and also fired on police headquarters and a U.S. courthouse early Friday, before engaging in a shootout with police.
Officials are investigating whether police fatally shot the suspect or if he took his own life. No police or other civilians were injured in the incident.
Police say the attack appeared to be politically motivated, noting the shooter was a man about 50 years old with a criminal record.
Austin is the capital of Texas.
