Hamas Militant Gets 3 Life Terms for Murder of Israeli Teens

An Israeli military court has sentenced a Hamas militant to three life prison terms in connection with the murder of three Israeli teenagers.

The court also ordered Hussam Hassan Kawasame to pay $63,000 in compensation to each of the three families at a hearing on Tuesday near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Kawasame was convicted last week for organizing and financing the kidnapping in June of the three Israeli teenagers near the West Bank town of Hebron. The teens were hitchhiking at the time and were later found dead.

His two accomplices in the case were shot dead by Israeli forces near Hebron in September.

The incident heightened tensions in the region and played a major role in sparking a 50-day war between Israel and Hamas that left more than 2,100 Palestinians and 73 Israelis dead.

Some information for this report came from AFP.
