Hungary's prime minister says plans for a tax on Internet use have been suspended and will be taken under consideration next year.

Viktor Orban said Friday people have questioned the "rationality" of the issue.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets twice this week to protest the proposed tax.

Orban said a "national consultation" on the Internet tax will be held in January.

Critics say the tax was an attempt by the prime minister to silence dissent in the country.
